Biography

Sonia Onyia is an Associate in the Firm’s Corporate and Commercial law practice, where she serves as the co-coordinator of the Firm’s Corporate Governance and Regulatory Compliance Practice Unit.

Her work spans corporate governance, banking and finance, board advisory, brand protection, regulatory compliance, technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) advisory, energy, and infrastructure. She advises key players in highly regulated sectors on technology regulation, data protection, intellectual property protection, digital economy transactions, technology contracting and compliance.

Sonia also advises on project finance, private credit, and fund structuring, including Public Private Partnerships, private equity, and venture capital funds, and supports corporate restructuring, debt and financial restructuring, and insolvency matters.

She is experienced in drafting and negotiating complex transaction documents and is recognised for delivering commercially focused and legally sound solutions within Nigeria’s regulatory framework.

Representative Experience

• Advised Nigeria’s largest telecommunications operator on regulatory compliance, licensing, and engagement with sector-specific regulators.

• Provided corporate governance advisory services to a leading multinational oil and gas company operating in Nigeria.

• Advised a leading private tertiary institution on the application of the Employee Compensation Act, the management of compensation funds, and the payment of staff gratuities as well as represented the institution at the National Industrial Court in labour related disputes.

• Currently advising a major player in Nigeria’s healthcare sector on a public private partnership with the Lagos state government on the establishment of an oncology centre in the state.

• Advised a leading telecommunications operator on the scope and limits of the powers of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s powers.
