Overview
The push to cut greenhouse gas emissions and meet the objectives of Article 2 of the Paris Agreement has driven a surge in research into cleaner energy. Carbon capture and storage, wind and solar have all emerged as options. More recently, hydrogen has gained attention as a viable alternative.
Hydrogen is a colourless, odourless, non-metallic gas that is abundant in the universe. On Earth, it occurs only in compound form and can be produced from fossil fuels, nuclear energy, biomass and renewable sources. When burnt as fuel, it produces water rather than carbon dioxide, which makes it an attractive alternative to fossil fuels. The shift towards hydrogen as an energy source is steadily gaining ground.
This insight examines the market and regulatory considerations around hydrogen gas in the context of Nigeria's energy transition goals. It also highlights the investment and financing opportunities available in the Nigerian energy market.
