KENNA Supports Mangrove Restoration in Bodo Community: Ecological Recovery and Livelihood Revival In partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF)

Overview

Months after the completion of a mangrove restoration project in Bodo Community, Gokana Local Government Area, Rivers State, field observations confirm clear signs of ecological recovery. The most notable indicator is the return of periwinkles (Tympanotonus fuscatus) and fiddler crabs (Uca spp.), both widely recognised as reliable biological markers of mangrove ecosystem health.

The project was delivered in partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), one of Nigeria's foremost environmental organisations, whose work in conservation, restoration, and community-led sustainability continues to shape the country's environmental landscape.

For the Bodo community, the return of periwinkles has immediate socioeconomic benefits. Periwinkles serve as an important local food resource and provide income opportunities, particularly for women traditionally involved in harvesting and processing activities. Beyond species recovery, the restored mangrove ecosystem is progressively delivering wider environmental services, including shoreline stabilisation, reduced erosion, improved sediment retention, enhanced nutrient cycling, and increased carbon sequestration potential.

The project stands as a strong example of effective, community-led mangrove restoration with lasting environmental and livelihood benefits. KENNA is proud to support this work in partnership with NCF, which aligns with our commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action, and community empowerment.
