KENNA Pro Bono Committee Hosts Career Session on Humanitarian Law at UNNAs part of its ongoing outreach initiatives, Nigerian commercial law firm KENNA, through its Pro Bono Committee, held a career session with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Law Clinic on Thursday, 28 August 2025, themed “Exploring Career Opportunities in Humanitarian Services.”The event aimed to show law students the different opportunities available in the humanitarian field while highlighting how KENNA’s pro bono work aligns with the Clinic’s activities. The initiative, driven by the firm’s Sustainability & Development Manager, Funmilayo Adeshina, reflects KENNA’s broader commitment to legal education, access to justice, and inspiring young lawyers to view the law as both a profession and a tool for social change.
KENNA was represented by its Head of People, Culture & Administration, Efechia Anuku, Senior Associate, Peter Afuba, and Associates, Ozioma Soludo and Shallom Ikenga, who engaged with the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Festus Ukwueze, and more than 70 law students in an enlightening session. They explained the scope of humanitarian services, highlighted career opportunities in human rights, refugee law, and policy advocacy, and stressed the importance of skills such as advocacy, cultural competence, and project management. They also shared practical entry points, including fellowships and internships, while candidly addressing challenges such as limited funding and burnout. There was high participation from the students who asked questions about balancing humanitarian work with private practice and the practical steps to enter the field.
On his part, Professor Festus Ukwueze commended the firm for supporting the Clinic’s work and expressed the faculty’s desire for sustained engagement with the firm. He particularly appreciated the Committee’s focus on humanitarian law, noting that it complements the faculty’s mission of raising socially responsible lawyers. At the close of the session, the Clinic shared information on unrepresented inmates identified during its recent outreach to the Enugu State Correctional Centre. The KENNA team, in response, pledged to review the cases and provide feedback, further underscoring the firm’s commitment to advancing access to justice.
