Protecting the Beat: Intellectual Property Rights in the Music Industry

Overview

IntroductionOn April 26 of every year, World Intellectual Property Day (WIPD) is celebrated. The theme for WIPD 2025, as determined by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), is IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP. According to WIPO, “From the rhythms that invite us to dance, to the lyrics that echo our emotions, music enriches every aspect of our lives. World Intellectual Property Day 2025 highlights how creativity and innovation, backed by IP rights, keep a vibrant, diverse, and thriving music scene that benefits everyone, everywhere.”In commemoration of WIPD 2025, Kenna has prepared a compendium of articles relevant to the music industry. This compendium is beneficial to different stakeholders in the music industry, from artists to producers, composers, record labels, publishers, collective management organisations and consumers/fans. This compendium comprises a four-article series which provides an overview of music ownership and the key intellectual property considerations in the music industry. It offers insight into music composition rights, master recording rights, and publishing rights, while also exploring the intricacies of music licensing and distribution.
